GVE completes long-term commercial support on Thames Tideway East

IMG_3998.jpeg

GVE's consultants have been highly praised for their work, completing six years of commercial support on Tideway - a groundbreaking civil engineering project transforming London's Victorian sewerage system.

Back in 2017, GVE were delighted to have the opportunity to provide commercial assistance on one of the UK’s largest infrastructure projects, Thames Tideway. The project involved construction of a series of tunnels spanning 25km in length. Its aim is to redirect the wastewater and sewage that currently overflows into the River Thames from the existing Victorian sewage system, as it is no longer sufficient to manage the waste produced by 9.6 million people in London. This will ultimately improve the water quality for the city’s residents and protect wildlife and ecology of the river.

The Tunnel runs from Abbey Mills Pumping Station in East London to Acton Storm Tanks in the London Borough of Ealing and is split into three packages: East, Central and West. GVE were assigned to working on the East Section, for Joint Venture Partnership, CVB (Costain, VINCI Construction Grands Projects and Bachy Soletanche).

GVE’s consultants remained on the project over a period of six years, until the completion of tunnelling activities in December 2023.

Receiving recognition

During that time we provided change management and senior quantity surveyors demonstrating our long-term commitment and flexibility on projects. GVE’s team managed key delivery parts of the project with complex commercial issues and encountered many challenges delivering the works from a commercial position. Towards the end of our time on the project, a GVE consultant was praised by the JV's senior commercial manager for being extremely reliable, with a high level of consciousness and care to accuracy and being well respected throughout the wider Site and Senior Leadership Team.

Tunnelling – East package

The East package comprised the construction of two tunnels, the 5.5km Main Tunnel and the 4.6km Greenwich Connection Tunnel. The Main Tunnel connects from one of the main drive sites, Chambers Wharf, where GVE were predominately based, to Abbey Mills Pumping Station, which connects to the Lee Tunnel in East London. The East section of the works comprised multiple work sites and tunnels, these are:

  • Abbey Mills Pumping Station

  • Chambers Wharf

  • Deptford Church Street

  • Earl Pumping Station

  • Greenwich Pumping Station

  • King Edward Memorial Park

  • Greenwich Connection Tunnel

  • Main Tunnel
